Dear teachers and students:
Dr. William Perrie of the Bedford Institute of Oceanography in Canada gave a report as follows:
Title: Satellite Remote Sensing and Climate Studies in the Arctic
Speaker: Dr. William Perrie
Reporting time: May 28th (Monday) 10:00am-11:00am
Reporting location: Room 412, College of Ocean and Atmosphere
Summary of the report: We first describe a recent field experiment which is intended to develop a climatology for sea state and sea ice in the Beaufort-and Chukchi Seas, to identify factors affecting the spatial and temporal variability of sea state, and to improve marine forecasting. We then provide a description of the linkage between atmospheric and oceanic dynamics, and how these processes can relate to summer sea ice retreat and autumn ice advance. We give some estimates for longer term simulations on decadal timescales. We relate these simulations to air-sea Variables relevant to society, like for example, boundary layer fog.
