China's 34th Antarctic Science Study

The 34th Antarctic scientific expedition team in China took the Snow Dragon polar expedition ship on November 7, 2017. The POGOC laboratory professor-level senior engineer Jiao Yutian departed from the ship and took part in the first half of the inspection. February 24, 2018 Disembarked from New Zealand on the day. In three months, the physical oceanographic mission of Prydz Bay and Ross Sea was completed. Professor Shi Jiuxin and the master student Sheng Yuan, who participated in the second half of the study, boarded the ship in New Zealand and executed the Amundsen Sea investigation mission. They returned to Shanghai on April 21, 2018. The survey took 165 days and the total range reached 38,000 nautical miles.

The main task undertaken by the POGOC laboratory in the first half was the Pritz Bay submarine operation. On January 5-6, 2018, Jiao Yutian successfully recovered the M10B and MDP1 submersibles deployed one year ago with the support of the Xuelong boat crew and the crew, and deployed the M10C and MD1A subscripts in situ. The land has completed the task of submarine, reflecting the maturity of the field operations and the active cooperation of all aspects, especially the spirit of hard work in the Antarctic investigation. The ADCP loaded on the MDP1 subscript is the first time that POGOC installed ADCP on the submarine, and the upper ocean current and sea ice drift data obtained will provide first-hand information for the study of the ice lake. The submarine is also equipped with a sample rack of the School of Materials Science and Engineering for corrosion resistance of metal materials in polar marine environments. In late January 2018, the Snow Dragon ship carried out a physical ocean CTD/LADCP cross-sectional survey in the Ross Sea shelf, and Jiao Yutian led the Ocean team to complete a total of 19 stations in three sections.

The second half of the inspection was concentrated in the Amundsen Sea. Shi Jiuxin was appointed as the head of the cadre field. He led the Ocean team to complete CTD/LADCP observations of 38 stations in 5 sections from March 2-23, 2018. , turbulent observation of 10 stations. The A2 section spans 12.7 latitudes and is 770 nautical miles (1420 km) long, making it the longest full-depth ocean comprehensive observation section ever completed in the Antarctic expedition in China. The section has a total of 15 stations and lasted 8 days. The north is deep into the westerly wind belt. It is also the first time that the Antarctic survey in China has carried out cross-section observation in the core area of the westerly belt. The information obtained reveals climate change information such as warming and desalination of the Antarctic bottom water. POGOC cooperated with the Second Institute of Oceanography of the State Oceanic Administration. Shi Jiuxin was the person in charge of the on-site operation. A set of 2400 m long submarine was placed in the slope area south of the Amundsen Sea with a water depth of 2,835 meters. This is China. The first set of submersibles placed in Amundsen Haibu was also the first time POGOC placed deep water submersibles in the Antarctic.

The POGOC members who participated in the survey also participated in the observation missions such as ADCP, XCTD/XBT, Argo buoys, surface drifting buoys, and air-exploration airballs, and obtained measured data in the western wind zone of the Southern Ocean.
